Story behind the song
I was thinking about some life lesson metaphors I've picked when I learned to drive and learned how to play pool. What you might leave behind is definately one that aplies to driving and hanging around pool halls.
Lyrics
I learned to drive Roy's pick up, while sitting on his lap Ease up on the clutch he’d say, now give it a little gas Always give fair warning, when you’re about to pass You could miss the one true love, if you drive to fast Sometimes the curves will fool you, so ease your way around Keep a quarter inch tread, and your rubber on the ground Feel the wheel, stay in control, while she runs through your hair But no matter how far you plan to go, always good to check your spare Well I’ve been burnt, so I’ve to learnt, these are the best rules that I've got On a long and dark, empty road, or just waiting for my next shot It’s nice to have a good friend, but on this he should rely It’s always best to check your spare, and what you might leave behind Now in the game of snooker, before you win you’re bound loose If you get hooked, have a good look, a smooth stroke will get you through You've got to have a potter's walk, and think 3 shots ahead Play your shape, line your balls up straight, and pot another red To Blacky you'll loose your money, quicker than he lost his eye Remember it ain’t, just what you get, but what you leave behind Give a second thought, about the long shot, he’ll clean you before you know You'll be watching by the sidelines, sometimes that's just how it goes Well I’ve been burnt, so I’ve to learned, these are the best rules that I've got On a long and dark, empty road, or just waiting for my next shot It’s nice to have a good friend, but on this he should rely It’s always best to check your spare, and what you might leave behind Never gave a thought, about the long shot, I was cleaned out before I could know.. Was left watching by the sidelines, and that’s about all she wrote. Jacques Goudreault June 14, 2001 Copyright SOCAN
