Story behind the song
Years ago my friend Kip read a story in the Readers Digest about a little girl who was diagnosed whith lukemia whan she was 5. She died when she was 7. Her favorite things to do in the last years of her life was to walk up and down the beach and watch the puppies and sandpipers playing in the sand. Kip wrote the words and sent them to Readers Digest. They paid him for his work and re-ran the story of the little girl to go with his work in the next issue. They also sent a copy of his work to the parents of the little girl. They sent Kip a thank you letter that he framed with the words he'd written. I found them on his wall and asked if I could put them to music. Thanks Kip, wherever you are.
Lyrics
Katidid Atkins Staring at the sky Wondering why the sun went away And left the clouds to cry She wanted her to stay And never go away Never go away oh oh oh Funny little pup dog Is sniffing in the sand Following a hidden trail Trying to understand Why he runs away And is he gone to stay Is he gone to stay oh oh oh (chorus) Sandpiper Softer than the wind blows Shinning little light Sparkles in a window See the starlight shinning in her smile Sandpiper Sailing by the seaside Listen to the waves Quiet as a lullaby Won't you sing for me a while Sing for me a while Sing for me a while oh oh oh Happy little kitten Climing up a tree Gunna watch the world today And see what she can see Chasing butterflies With wonder in her eyes Wonder in her eyes oh oh oh (chorus)
