Story behind the song
This music and mood for this actually came from a picture I saw in a shop. I thought it was wonderful; evocative of heat and the deep south and crickets calling to each other in the humid air. There was music in the picture. I took it home and looked at it out there, knowing there was a song in it. Then, one evening I could almost hear the arrangement, thick in the air, and I knew if I started, the arrangement would come to me. It came very easily. I left it like that, knowing the same thing would happen with the lyrics and melody, and one week later, they also came to me.
It's an odd song but close to my heart. I came downstairs one morning, and was listening to the song for a minute, when I realised it wasn't actually playing. I turned to my partner, Lesley and said, 'did you hear that?'
'Yes' she said, 'the song was actually in the air itself.'
Strange but true, as the man once said.
