Story behind the song
Babylon is Fallen was originally a Sacred Harp shaped-note hymn written by W.E. Chute, 1878. I wrote this adaption while in prison after the Group of Eight Summit in Genoa, Italy, July 2001, but the spirit applies to any walled city under military occupation. It's about what happens when our illusions -- that the media report the truth, that the police are there to protect you, that our government leaders really do want peace and global prosperity ... come crashing down.
Lyrics
Babylon is Fallen
This was the day so long expected,
This was the year of full release.
Genoa's walls are now erected,
And the G8 say they want peace.
But in our hearts and in our minds
We will not take their lies no more.
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.
Corporate giants stand in wonder,
What is this that comes to pass:
Murm'ring like the distant thunder,
Crying, "Oh alas, alas."
Swell the sound, you CEOs and Presidents,
Policemen, people, rich and poor;
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.
Raise your banners in this hour.
We have come. This is our time.
None can stop the people's power
Of all who now as kindred souls combine.
Your hateful lies now we've rejected
The police reign of terror is over,
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.
