New on the club scene in Dallas is the band Ideology, which is not really a band at all in the traditional sense. Ideology is a two man show headed up by Michael Hirtzel and guided by the beats of Chance Cochran. A blend of hard hitting acoustic rhythm guitar mixed with lyrics rich in real life experiences create the raw sound that is Ideology.
Hirtzel says of the sound, “I like the fact that it’s just me and Chance and a couple or instruments up there. There’s nothing to hide, nothing to hold back. If you hold back with just your voice and an acoustic it gets dull quick. I just hope people can see that I’m trying to be real, naked in front of audiences. People respond to artists who lay it all out there for them to rummage and pick through.”
And Hirtzel definitely lets his audiences rummage all they want.
Ideology’s new EP, Nostalgia’s Return, is filled with emotional connections that play along to upbeat rhythms to create what the title suggests - a return of nostalgia to the listener. Crescendos of painful topics mixed with upbeat hooks tend to clash in normal life circumstances, and yet in Nostalgia’s Return they mix to tell a story of reflection and life’s constant hope of upward mobility.
“I just hope everyone can feel the fact that just because your life is full of foul things right now doesn’t mean that it will be like that in the next week, next day, or even an hour from now. Circumstances only beat you if you let them.”
