A tune about a time when I stayed up 'til 5 am working on a project. The beat is super catchy. The lyrics have inspired moments, and also contrived moments, but overall it's a good number. I like to finish live shows with it.
This guy is a crazy rapper who does some unconventional things sometimes.
I, Sore Thumb, am now what you listen to. You should probably list me among your favorite bands on myspace, and also make one of my songs play automatically and bother people who visit.
Story behind the song
This is about a time that me and some other people stayed up all night doing homework. I haven't actually told these people that I wrote a song about that time, so WE'LL SEE how it goes over.
Lyrics
Beating the sun
VERSE 1
Two AM, due tomorrow, barely prepared,
One friend, one acquaintance, both with burdens to bear.
Minds winding down, every one half sure we’re
Gonna see the sunrise without getting up early.
Dug ourselves holes, and can’t really escape.
Pens on papers, just willing ideas to take shape.
No-one else here, why pretend that we’re trying?
It’s all pretty much over. Last stand before dying.
Plans laid for months fall in flurries of laughs,
Shortcuts are forged, goals sliced neatly in half.
There’s no longer a real world, it’s gone to our senses
No need to go back, ‘cause back there’s consequences.
It’s a comforting moment, too late to succeed
All efforts heroic, it truly feels free
Hour hand flies past three, glad that I’m not alone,
It’s funny the times when you feel like your home.
Hook
There’s a peace that you feel when you see no way out
Given graciously, even though this mess is my fault.
There’s release in the loss of self-confident pride,
But when we beat the odds, that’s when we feel most alive.
VERSE 2
Hour hand passes four, and I hardly regret
All the sleep that I’ll lose, and how tired I’ll get,
Rays of hope keep us up, and we’ll take them and run
Just to race from the rays of the impending sun.
The task ahead hardly shrinks, I hardly care.
This place is my trap, but I’m glad to be there
Every day seems so short, precious time you can’t waste
I’m glad for a day that’s too long for my taste
Thank God in the good and the bad times, they say,
It’s not natural when things end up this way,
But I’ve found when you sit back, ease up, and slow down,
You find joy where you thought it couldn’t found
Five o’clock, red eyes, headaches and slurred speech,
Here in the hour we hoped not to reach.
By some miracle when we all left, and were through
We had accomplished everything we’d set out to do.
(hook)
Verse 3 (sort of a bridge)
The task ahead hardly shrinks, I hardly care.
This place is my trap, but I’m glad to be there
Every day seems so short, not enough time to waste
I’m glad for a day that’s too long for my taste
Thank God in the good and the bad times, they say,
It’s not natural when things end up this way,
But I’ve found when you sit back, ease up, and slow down,
You find joy where you thought it couldn’t be found
(hook)
(Really long ending.)
