Story behind the song
“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought ‘surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it’. He was afraid & said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” This song was written during a camp in Kansas that used the theme "This Place Is Awesome". The chorus was written and used during the camp in 2001. The verse to the song did not come about until 2004.
Genesis 28:16-17
“This Place Is Awesome” was the theme of a camp in Kansas several years ago. I was leading some of the worship during the services in the evenings. During a rehearsal one morning, I began to play around with a melody, and some words. Within just a few hours the chorus of “This Place Is Awesome” was complete. I lead the students in the song that night, and it quickly became the un-official theme song of the camp.
I really liked “This Place is Awesome”, and almost put it on our first CD. The only problem was that it seemed too short. While working on the songs for “Prelude”, we pulled out the chorus, and began working on a verse.
“For You are here in this place. Won’t You draw us near to seek Your face. It is You that we love. We lift our hands to praise You. We stand in awe because”
Just as Jacob found that God was with him at the place he named Bethel, we can know that God is with us wherever we are. When we are in His presence, we can truly say “this place is awesome”.
Lyrics
(chorus)
This place is awesome for You are here.
Now we lift our voice to You, may it fall upon Your ear
for You are holy. Come fill this place
It's because of Your amazing grace
that this place is awesome
(verse)
For You are here in this place
Won't You draw us near to seek Your face
It is You that we love
We lift our hands to praise You
We stand in awe because this place is....(to chorus)
