Story behind the song
I really do hate Uptown. Formerly known for its "top notch mental facility funded by the government, funding was pulled and the lunatics were left to roam the streets. Rejects from all over the city gravitated to the area in search of help...in the form of meds, food and shelter from the cheap Hostels and the Salvation Army residense Building near the homeless shelter/soup kitchen. Unfotunately meth and crack labs soon sprang up all over the place, and instead of legal meds, all the crazies were on meth and rock. The cops would patrol the area relentlessly searching any person of colour on the street once The Mayor decided to step up selling buildings to incoming developers for condos. I got stopped once just for standing outside my apartment and chewing gum...and they gave me "the crackhead search" underwear, socks, under the tongues, etc. Also the gangbangers in the area became increasingly paranoid about any black male they didnt know personally walking through thier drug spots, where somehow were spreading almost as fast as the condos. Maybe it was just the area of Uptown that i lived in, but I still hate it.
Lyrics
I HATE UPTOWN
--------------
i hate uptown
its full o gentrifyin scum
people always say that its great
and it was if you had a gun
if i was a drunken bum then id find a place to sleep
get beat down, NARCs check my drawers while i get a bite to eat
but im just a workin man and i dont wanna see
cops on thugs around the corner, cuttin thier eyes at me
i hate uptown
once asylum and a slum
now they say “it’s oh so nice”
just money makes you "the one"
if i was a drunken bum then id find a place to sleep
get beat down, they check my drawers while i get a bite to eat
but im just a workin man and i dont wanna see
cops on people around the corner, cuttin thier eyes at me
