Doug Hendrix is a singer/songwriter who has a fine bluesy voice. He seems intent on combining southern soul, gospel and blues into a genre of his own. - Listen.
Doug Hendrix has been around for a while. He and Walter Stewart were the Knoteven Brothers in the 70's and early 80's, They were a harmonizing acoustic trio/then duo configuration backed up by some of the finest session pickers alive and enjoyed somewhat of a cult following in Nashville, Tennessee and throughout the South. Doug signed songs with the publishers of several major artists including Kenny Rogers, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Seals and Croft, Ed Bruce, and Delbert McClinton. Unfortunately, the songs were never released on an album and are collecting dust in someone's archives. Classifying Doug Hendrix is like trying to pound a square peg into a round hole. He has always considered himself a writer first and rarely sticks to one genre of music for long, preferring to explore many different styles. While doing the Nashville scene, Doug wrote many Country flavored tunes that weren't quite Country enough for that town. He was constantly told things like, "Man, that sounds like a hit, but I think it's just the way YOU do it!". These days he would fit in well with the likes of Lyle Lovett and Vince Gill ( in fact; Tony Brown, later to be Lyle's first producer at MCA and winner of countless music industry awards, was producing Doug's demos in Nashville in the early 80's. Tony also produced George Strait, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Trisha Yearwood, Mark Chesnutt, and many others ). Doug was just way before his time. These days, Doug Hendrix is making his music for himself. He's not trying to conform to anyone's ideal.

Story behind the song
I wrote this instrumental guitar piece for the National Fingerpicking Championship at Winfield 2002. I didn't get to do it because I bombed my first tune in the preliminary round and didn't make it to the final round where I intended to play it. (The winner said I nailed my second tune..so I believe him..But the guy that was 'supposed' to win said:"That was scary!"....so I dunno. LOL!)

Anyway...so now someone gets to hear Martha's Egg, warts and all, on this down-n-dirty recording.

Martha was the last surviving Passenger Pigeon. She died at the Cinncinati Zoo in 1914 after a half century of relentless hunting had left the flocks reduced to absolute zero in the wild by 1910. Passenger Pigeons once numbered in the billions in the North American skies. It's one species for which we know the exact moment of extinction. Shame on us!

Below is Martha's epitaph at the Smithsonian Institution where she is no longer on display but lies rotting in the basement:

MARTHA

Last of her species, died at 1 p.m.,
1 September 1914, age 29, in the
Cincinnati Zoological Garden.
