Basically this song is summed up by the phrase "I told you so" and the feelings that are prevalent when you sit and watch a friend's romantic relationship crumble just like you expected.
It was originally written for a recording project one of Chaz' friends was planning to put together. The idea was to fill a CD with as many one minute long songs from different bands and solo artists as could be found. The project fell by the wayside, which was just as well as we were having some difficulty reducing the original ideas for the song down to just one minute! (If memory serves, the shortest we ever clocked it was about 1min. 10secs.) So, instead, we decided to extend it by adding the (originally ad libbed) refrain at the end.
Lyrics
So many chances came and passed you by
You keep him there when you should say goodbye
Anybody else would have realised
You’ve got yourself in a fix and you can’t get out
Like waiting for the rain in a summer drought
How deep is your hate for him about now?
Cold water and gasoline
Is how the pair of you have always seemed
Forgive me if you think that I am sounding green
But what will you do this time next year?
When everything around you has dissolved in tears
Don’t say I didn’t warn you my dear!
Oooooh yeah!
When I call to pick up the pieces
Of your life that’s crumbled and seared
Don’t say I didn’t warn you my dear!
