My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
It was a hot border town, near New Mexico down, where the Rio Grande waters run brown Been ridin’ for days, needin’ more than a shave, I stopped at a small boardin’ house Thunder growlin’ from the sky, rain comin’ in She was sittin’ on the front porch, just watchin’ the wind CHORUS Like a desert rose, pure gypsum sand, sunshine on a dark rainy day Beauty like I’d never seen, I couldn’t turn away It happened so fast, she made me forget, how was I gonna explain To a woman who still loved me Back in Santa Fe The rain cooled the air, we were hardly aware, as the moon gave way to the sun She begged me to stay, I shoulda rode away, she kissed me again and again She quenched a lonely man’s needs, and I quickly gave in Promisin’ I’d never leave, then we watched the wind CHORUS (repeat) Told her I’d be back, there was a telegraph, a message to send right away Rode into town, as the sun went down, wrote I was going to stay And wouldn’t be home anymore, tried to make a long story short Cause I’d found something’, I wasn’t lookin’ for When I got back, the night had passed, ‘n there were voices in her room She begged him to stay, ‘n watch the wind all day, kissed him again and again Oh…I’d been such a fool, I just rode away Wonderin’ if it was too late, to beat the mail to Santa Fe CHORUS Like a desert rose, pure gypsum sand, sunshine on a dark rainy day Beauty like I’d never seen, I couldn’t turn away It happened so fast, to even regret, now how am I gonna explain To a woman I hope will still love me Back in Santa Fe
