Shadowy lyrics, sweet harmonies & keen counter melodies aplenty from transplanted Englishman, and former Roger McGuinn sideman; a little bit UK and a little bit USA. If REM hailed from Armthorpe rather than Athens, they might sound a little like this. Maybe not.

Story behind the song
When we're younger and full of ambition, we sometimes are very tough on ourselves and our perceived failures. Hopefully we get to a point where we are more forgiving. I wrote these lyrics after coming off the road with Roger McGuinn. There I was playing some fantastic venues and doing the Tonight Show and all that, and after it was over there I was playing clubs and bars again in relative anonymity ( hence "...build yourself up just to knock yourself down; first you're eight miles high then you're right back underground, turn, turn, turn around"). It was then that I quit my band and got out of the business for a while. Now, I'm over my burned-out period and making music for the right reasons; all energised if you will. I thought it was appropriate that I opened my CD with this song.
