It's been a few years since I came to this street
The old city walls add a sense of history
Panel-beamed roofs on an endless terrace
I slowed my steps
I wasn't quite prepared for this
You eyes lit up just before you smiled
It wasn't this year but if feels like now
I'm driven towards the modern courtyard
It's smartened up now - still, it doesn't feel so bad
I read your letter
I read it several times, it always says the same thing
With a few words underlined for me
Every street sign seems to bear your name
From Manor House tube up to Turnpike Lane
Past Somerfield aisles until I go insane
It's a long walk home, I'm glad I came
But I don't belong
The magic's gone from Haringey
Every next day is a chance for mistakes
One slice of toast and a bowl of cornflakes
Cycle up hills - the view's a picture
Every next day is a new adventure!
I took your letter
I put it with old birthday cards and dated photos
So it feels like a long time ago
