Story behind the song
I had a story to tell but I couldn't because it was too personal, so I made up this one instead.
Lyrics
I walked into this bar
where I heard that now she danced
She'd always been the kind of girl
that I wished I could romance
But she had never known it
I'd admired her from afar
I remember driving past her place
too shy to leave my car
She already was a dancer
a cheerleader too
We thought she'd be a famous actress
in just a year or two
I'd never seen a fire
like the one that lit her eyes
Each one of her hopes and dreams
We all had memorized
How can a girl so pretty look so jaded
How could the sparkle in her eyes have faded
The girl I've always wanted
is right in front of me
And the joy that used to light her face
is the one thing I can't see
I looked around there were lots of girls
they were beautiful I'm sure
But tonight they were only wallpaper
I was looking just for her
It didn't take that long to find her
dancing near a chair
a nameless man without a face
held dollars in the air
I couldn't move so I just stared
to see her naked there
Her body was more stunning
than the fantasies had dared
She turned and put her top back on
and then she turned to me
That's when I saw her new cold brown eyes
stairing right through me
And I became a customer
she'd never seen before
And she got so close that I could smell
the drinks that she had poured
But somewhere under the makeup
and the cigarette smell
the sparkle is still there
so deep it doesn't show
