Story behind the song
"Haven't We Learned' is essentially a song about American politics and the general condition of the USA . I have long considered the parallels between the United State and its excesses and the great Roman Empire. It is Rome's crumbling from within that I refer to in "Haven't we learned from those who've come before us".
Lyrics
I lie awake and wonder What a single voice can do In a war against injustice A revolt long overdue In a nation that has sent men For a walk upon the moon How can there still be people Without shelter, without food Haven’t we learned From those who've come before us Haven’t we learned Must it come crashing down upon us Haven’t we learned Haven’t we learned They send our soldiers packing To those places far away They say it’s about freedom About democracy But if you think about it You can read between the lines It’s all about them cashing in On someone’s sacrifice There’s no room for conviction With the feeders at the top In all their lust for power All our choices have been bought And I know we don’t consider The “Great Experiment” has failed Now death is dealt for dollars And democracy’s for sale
