Story behind the song
The lyrics to this piece were originally inspired by a tragic house fire that happened on 12/31/97. On the anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11/01, something compelled me to review the original lyrics. When I changed the word "smoke" to the word "dust" in the first verse and re-wrote the last few lines of the chorus, I got chills. It seemed almost destined that this song was actually meant to be about my feelings the year after 9/11 instead of the year after the fire. This song is one of my personal favorites.
