Story behind the song
My therapist used the word "predator" to describe perpetrators in my past. Combining this with watching a lot of Animal Planet inspired me to write this song as a metaphor of sexual predation on young women seeking love and attention.
Lyrics
I was just like a clueless, hopeless deer desparately attracted to the cougar lurking near. When he'd come towards me, so willingly I'd fall, to be left lying heart ripped out, waiting for a call. I'm prey. Caught, chewed up, spit out, left on the ground. I'm prey. I know if he wants seconds, he'll come around. I'm prey. Now I stand frozen with my ears up high. When I see his face again, it's a challenge not to cry. One move towards me, I'll lunge into the trees, or else I'll be back on the ground and again on my knees. I'm prey. Caught, chewed up, spit out, left on the ground. I'm prey. I know if he wants seconds, he'll come around. I'm prey. But the cougar has been preyed upon as well. No animal can live a life without pain and hell. Now he's prey. Now he's on the ground. Now she's prey. Now she's on the ground. Now he's got me and I'm his prey. Now I'm on the ground. Always someone is someone's prey. Always someone on the ground. It's time to stop being prey. Gotta get myself off of the ground and stop being prey. All my life, I've set myself up to be his prey. Time to get myself off of the ground and stop being prey.
