Story behind the song
see info for 'endive forest prelim A'. but seriously, i'm sorry for my snarky comments in the notes for A. i understand that the concept of key is incredibly important for much of music, even non-'western' music. so i'm sorry for being an asshole about it. i can't get past listening to music in terms of the harmonic series. even this doesn't get me off the hook, as lots of microtonal people are all about constructing whole new scales that act the same way as the old ones. what i mean is that timbre, rhythm, pitch, and so fourth are all abstractions that describe the same thing in different terms. lucier said, in response to 'i am sitting in a room', "Actually, there's no such thing as 'high' and 'low' notes, we simply borrowed these terms from the visual world to describe something we didn't understand... Thinking of sounds as measurable wavelengths, instead of high or low musical notes, has changed my whole idea of music from a metaphor to a fact and, in a real way, has connected me to architecture." Ok so this peice is still very much a metaphor. it describes no real structure or situation. call it science fiction, then, because it's impossible physics and glossy, elegant theory. this is because lucier's message, though buried somewhere in my $0.05 of the Great Aesthetic Dialogue, has already been responded to, and parts that were not in tune with my message were attenuated, whereas the parts that fit the space resonate. i'm being cute. right, so sound is interpreted by our auditory centers as both fourieresque static harmonics and also transients of flux as well as myriad other abstractions ad nausiem right up to 4 voice counterpoint perfect authentic cadences or khanda ekka tala, chapu gati, raga kalyani.
