Story behind the song
You've gotta fight on. Never give in to trouble. This song is about standing up to the barricades which will block your path. When a girl I knew took her own life, it shocked the whole community. I guess that was at the back of my mind as I did this track.
Lyrics
THEY SAY
Verse 1:
Put the past behind you, your eyes ahead,
We got one life to live between the gulfs of dead,
I keep tripping but each time I raise myself once more,
Keep walking with my eye fixed on that open door,
I’m wishing more was apparent to me,
Cos too many of my homies been collapsin’ on me,
Kinda feeling uncertain, too self-conscious,
To be honest, I just can’t trust another man’s promise,
There’s been a long, cold night, but I know it’s gonna end,
And when the dawn comes, I’ll find my friends,
That’s the plan that I gotta stick to,
It’s a slim avenue to proceed through,
I need to succeed, if I don’t, what’s it worth?
If I fall, what was the point of my very birth?
But they say, don’t see it from a negative view,
Don’t die because of pride, whatever you do…
Chorus:
You hear me…
You know what they say, what they say,
You feel me?
Don’t be afraid, be afraid,
You need me,
So lord I pray, I pray,
That we see another day,
We let them say what they say…
Verse 2:
They say that you gotta be at peace with yourself,
They say that happiness isn’t about health and wealth,
They say you have something that no-one else knows,
So remember what they say, it’s just the way life goes…
I was told to grow up and be something,
Not to waste my talents on number-crunching,
I had a dream, that one day I’d find a wonderful life,
And what a wonderful world, that sheltered me from strife,
But you gotta realise that for so many people,
Every day is a battle to stay away from evil,
All around us, even though we don’t stare,
We can see humanity despair,
Do you ever wonder what goes through someone’s brain,
When they take away a life, some unbearable pain,
For every beautiful thing in our world, there’s also sadness,
But I guess that’s not bad, at least we found a balance…
Chorus
8 bar instrumental break: (Spoken)
Yeah… do you feel what I mean?
It’s not meant to be easy…
Who knows what it’s meant to be…
All I know is that tough times teach you something you need to learn…
Verse 3:
Yup! So many people, so many problems,
I wish this music could help to solve ‘em,
I don’t know that much, but I can try to understand,
And if you’re going down, I’ll throw out a hand,
Just picture hanging from the edge,
Between life and death, all you’ve got’s the ledge,
That’s the sort of struggle that could bring you down,
But you mustn’t let go, never fall to the ground,
You know there’s other people gonna make it hard,
And a lotta haterz out there gonna play their part,
But if you fall to hate, you’re hurting yourself,
Haterz can’t handle the positive stealth,
So even though they talk –ish, even though they hate,
You can turn your back on that, try to collaborate,
Be a player of the peace game, a warrior of truth,
You don’t believe me? Mate, your life is the proof…
Hook x 2
Outro (Over hook):
Yeah… I know there’s a lot of hardship out there…
I’m just so lucky that those troubles haven’t yet appeared in my life…
But for all the people out there, who feel like the world is crashing around them…
Just remember the good times… know that however hard it is to go on now,
One day you can be happy again… one day you can remember what they say…
Hold firm… keep walking…
