Lyrics
The moral of the story
It comes at the beginning cause I don’t believe in wasting time
You can give a dollar to a beggar but the beggar would rather be drinking wine
And the woman known as Nefertiti never shows her face
She only shows you what you left behind
Every body sing sha la la la la la la la lie
Well I spotted Nefertiti at the deli on the corner between Broadway and Lafayette
I was looking at the way her hair fell around her shoulders
As I lit another cigarette
As she was stepping through the door she gave a dollar to a beggar
So I bent down and gave up a dime
And he sang sha la la la la la la la lie
Well I followed Nefertiti she was moving through the traffic
She was swinging and grooving her hips
I was thinking about honey and I know you think it’s funny
But I thought about licking her lips
The beggar he got up he was closing in behind be
He started walking double time
Singing Sha la la la la la la la la la
And the beggar man sings the sad lament of time
“Although the past does not repeat itself boy
God damn if it don’t rhyme”
Sha la la la la la la la la
I caught up to Nefertiti in the halo of her doorway
‘Neath a bare bulb burning bright
I tapped her on the shoulder, I held my breath an hour, I prepared myself for paradise
But the beggar started laughing she did just as he predicted
She turned around and covered my eyes
And they sang sha la la la la la la la lie
I was hoping Nefertiti would invite me in for coffee, we just stood there for a little while
Then she turned around and took my hand and led me up that stair case
5 flights felt like 40 miles
And with each step her ivory legs were moving like a dancer’s
I ran my finger up her thigh
And she sang sha la la la la la la la lie
Then at the top of the stairs she put her key into the door
She bent down and pick the paper up off of the floor
Then she walked over to the telephone and listened to her messages
But I don’t recall what they said
And just when I thought that I was making out her features
She locked the door and turned out the light
And we sang sha la la la la la la all night
But the beggar man kept on singing right out side
“You know she’ll take your heart away from you
You better leave the past behind”
Sha la la la la la la la la la la
Well I left Nefertiti somewhere round 6 or 7
Though it might have been 4 or 5
I was reeling I was shaking from the loving we was making
I barely made it out alive
And when I stepped onto that sidewalk you know I ran into that beggar
So I took him out and bought him some wine
And we sang sha la la la la la la la lie
Everybody sing….
