Story behind the song
Ironically this was written during a mental blockage. We were sat at Spider Studios in the middle of the night, tired, frustrated and feeling that we'd really not acheived anything that day. I had my acoustic guitar and just started playing a palm-muted D5 chord. Esme, layed on the couch with a drink in her hand and a face like doom, just started singing random words about being bored and creatively blocked. It took us a good long while to realise that a song was writing itself there in front of us and when it finally clicked we ran into the studio and started recording it. We had a melody and a riff and it just unfolded into Bones.
Lyrics
Russian doll inside a doll i’m trapped inside this plaster-cast this rusting shell splinters seizes like stone leaving me inside with no way to respond my mind is quick and stillness feeds my thoughts the more I feed the more I hunger until the whole world’s spinning slideshow bleaching scorching burnout the stillness grows louder until it’s pounding on my bones I want to sink so deep down inside my self until I am so tiny my pain is but flowers that I look up at from my grave or down on from the noose that binds me to my flesh traps me in this broken prison as if pinned by chains into every joint compressed ‘til the breath of my will escapes me Burning, swollen From the steel of my very bones the more I feel the more I question how I carry the load on such a fragile frame bleaching scorching burnout
