Story behind the song
A friend of mine made this field recording during his travels through Nepal. A Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhist) chanting ceremony takes place in front of the stupa in the Kathmandu valley. Stupas are typically erected in metropolitan areas, places with lots of traffic and business. There are two soundworlds I was aiming to create here, one is the chanting, and the other, the din of commerce. Instead of locating these continua within a narrative relationship, I was interested in setting up an 'emergent' or 'interpenetrant' relationship, a symbiosis between the two. Swayambhu translates to "Self-Created". The image of the stupa struggles to construct itself from the marketplace. Its mere existence is nominally dependent on that of the city, and yet the city (or that country *ahem*) seeks to supress all other spheres but its own. Although the recording is actually from Nepal, this is a statement about Tibet. Tibet is a cute, backwards little town in China. They have lots of gorgeous electronic boutiques there.
