A cautionary tale. You can make excuses. You can make apologies. Or, if you're willing to, you can make a difference. A plaintive melody carries this provocative lyric to its final image of sad serenity.

An event. An emotion. An image. A memory. A word or a phrase. Inspiration can be powerful and fleeting, or subtle yet ceaselessly haunting. Christopher Caldwell's compositions reveal him as he searches his soul while at the same time nourishing it.

Story behind the song
The song. The story. They're one and the same.
Lyrics
Tiny Little Crosses Have you seen 'em 'long the highways and the back roads now and then? As you're flyin' by they'll catch your eye and make you look again. They're simple and they're somber. They seem so out of place. They're a reminder to both me and you of God's amazing grace. Do you wonder where they come from or envision who they're for? Does it seem as though each year or so you see a couple more? They might be worn by weather or may be new and clean. But either way they warn us all by what they are and what they mean. Tiny little crosses. Unimaginable losses. Crying out to us as silent symbols of pain and tears, of sad survivors, of stolen years. The shadow each one casts belies the size of tiny little crosses. As you're on the phone explaining to your boss you're running late, do you slow your speed enough to read a name or see the date? So many faceless strangers...what difference can they make? Yet from beyond the grave they still might save you from your worst mistake. Would apologizing be enough to make up for the crime? Take it down a notch and check your watch. Relax, you'll be on time. The lonely, broken-hearted aren't healed by your regret. And while you live they may forgive you but they never will forget. Tiny little crosses marking devastating losses. Somehow capturing our solemn reverence and darkest fears. Our blind indifference just disappears. So let's all lend a hand to end the trend of tiny little crosses. Sometimes you’ll see a Teddy bear or garish plastic flowers; some soggy faded photographs in snow or April showers. It only takes a second to cause a family’s darkest hours. And in that moment all is reckoned by some unseen higher powers. Do you find you wind up promising to make a brand new start? Are you haunted by the way they try to reach into your heart? So powerful and poignant, they surely give one pause. Assigning blame's a foolish game because deep down we all have flaws. Let me tell you ‘bout the time I ordered one more for the drive? Stumbled to my car, and left the bar...I managed to survive. But standing in the shadows on highway twenty-three are four more crosses and a broken man who's lost his family. Tiny little crosses don't define how deep his loss is. Who can place a price on finger paintings or high school cheers? The joyous weddings? The golden years? Each day he goes and sadly throws a rose on tiny little crosses.
