Story behind the song
Space Journey is a contemporary track which has a lot to offer in the area of harmonics, as well as the usual techno style effects. The bass, string and piano phrases follow a complex set of chords arranged in the key of C minor. Although the use of a minor key signature is not unique to Dance FX 21, the use of C (rather than G) is achieving better utilisation of the lower end. This along with other measures (i.e. compression & EQ etc) is helping towards the creation of beefier bass-lines, which in turn, is very important to the overall mix balance.
The chords themselves are rooted on C and D, the latter which involved a bit of innovation regarding compatibility with the key of C minor. All chords were written down as they were worked out against the key signature, and as a result, some interesting solutions such as D7(dim) were arrived at. In order to insure compatibility with such, chords like Cm4-maj7 were also used.
Regarding the effects, the bass-line is filtered which isn't anything unusual, but regarding the quality of such, it's quite a different ballgame. Much is due to the quality of the bass-line itself - it's considerably richer than those of previous tracks (except Into the Abyss... maybe), and has quite a vinyl edge in comparison. The above is achieved by not only tweaking the EQ and compression settings, but also the filter and amplitude attack / decay parameters. A longer attack allows more time for the sound to peak after the initial drum beat etc, thereby allowing more time for the listener to interpret the signal. Once the sound itself is right, then the filter is more likely to sound good too, depending (of course) on the filter configuration.
I could go on, but... - Enjoy!
