Ballad: Sometimes a solitary walk can open our minds to our hearts, if we are willing to listen.

My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
I took a walk the other day – to have a little talk with myself It’d been a while since I'd done that - and I figured it might help So I invited all my different points of view - to come along To reflect on what had turned out right - and all that had turned out wrong We walked for quite a while it seemed – when impatience broke the ice My stubborn side just disagreed - it wasn't open to advice My quiet side was silent – it seemed my modesty was laying low While hope drove home a few good points – that took us deeper in my soul Well pride kept saying he was right – and old envy weighed in too But outspoken took my stubborn's side – against greed's point of view About that time my anger – well he started taking a harder stand My trusting side stayed quiet – while my stern side made demands There were no concessions – and I can't say I was a bit surprised At the same old misdirection - I'd been following most of my life And I’d listened to about all the wisdom - I could take, much less impart When I finally heard a lonely whisper – and it was coming from my heart So as it spoke we started listening - even my reckless side grew quiet And soon we were all admittin’ - that perhaps none of us were right My mind confessed it just didn’t know - my heart could be so wise And by the time our walk was over – well, we all realized BRIDGE That when a heart tells you things - that the mind does not It’s worth the while to listen – and give some second thought And when the world is falling in - it's always best to choose To listen to what the heart says first – to find out what to do When I choose to listen to what my heart says - I know what to do
