My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
A friend of mine said he felt as though - he’d lost his get up and go Spent his nights wide awake – n’ ached from head to toe Said he couldn’t seem to concentrate – on things he had to do I sent my friend to a doctor – to get an expert point of view The doc asked him lots of questions – as he diagnosed A multitude of symptoms – listened close to his pulse He put down that cold stethoscope – and wrote on my friend’s chart This man’s clearly sufferin’ - from a badly broken heart CHORUS And said, You heart’s not - what it used to be So that may account For why your world is upside down – and inside out Then he said the only cure is in a woman’s lovin’ arms Otherwise you’ll have to learn to live with a bruised and battered heart My friend had a bad heartache once – the best he’d ever had Guess he never realized - how long these things can last Well it’s a bad deal when a heart won’t heal – now the chances are It’ll be a long recovery - from badly beaten heart CHORUS (repeat) I think my friend should will his heart – to science in the end And then someday they all might find– a way to help other men Until then and in the end - he's still gotta heal the scars And find a way to live today – with his barely beating heart TAG Well just like me he can learn to live With a bruised and battered heart
