Story behind the song
The lyrics for the song were written by Carman while waiting for a connecting flight at the Atlanta airport. Carman was on his way to a business meeting in Virginia Beach, VA, when he made a scheduled stop in Atlanta. While waiting there, he observed a number of uniformed military personnel. Carman was particularly intrigued by the number of female soldiers in the group. He was especially one middle aged soldier whom he later learned was COL Mary C. Gomez, Commander, 5th BDE /95DIV (IT).
"I saw all those soldiers and was moved by the fact that many of those girls looked to be younger that my own daughter," said Carman. "Then I saw this woman, roughly my age, who was also dressed in her uniform. I then realized that this was probably somebody's mom, but as for right now, she's a soldier." Carman recalled the words of former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch when she said to her rescuers, "I'm An American soldier too," and began to write the song "She's An Army of One". Carman says he wrote the song as a tribute to COL Gomez, all the women who serve in America's armed forces, and the families of those who've paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom.
In a recent telephone interview, TRA-STAR President Frank Scherman stated, "Obviously, the military is diverse in its makeup and not all musical styles will appeal everyone. So in a rather risky move we decided to combine three different genre of music into one production." The song will feature Country singer Steven Hall, Gospel/Soul singer; Shree Newman, Latina crooner; Johnny Vasquez., The McCormick Brothers, Brent Mason, and a whole cast of other artists who will make cameo appearances on the recording. The producers painstakingly selected an all-star group of musicians to perform on "She's An Army of One".
"These are some of the worlds best at what they do", said Carman who will producer the project. Their combined credits include more than 100 Grammy Awards. According to allmusic.com, their collective recording credits include performances with such artists as; Cher, Bryan Adams, Toto, George Straight, Alice Cooper, Billy Preston, Reba, Barbara Streisand, Alabama, Alan Jackson, and countless others. Lyrics
SHE’S AN ARMY OF ONE (ARMY STRONG)
By: Mark L. Carman
All Rights Reserved, Piney River Publishing, 2007
It’s been a long night, now she’s up with the sun
Her morning is hectic, there’s a lot to be done
Got to gather her things, Got to say her goodbyes,
She fights to hold back the tears from her eyes…..
God knows she don’t want to but she knows she must go,
Her friends and her family will be missing her so.
They’ll pray every night, before they go to sleep
Asking the good lord, that her soul he’ll keep.
She’s an American Soldier, being all she can be
Fighting for freedom, for our liberty
She’s somebody’s daughter, maybe somebody’s mom
An American soldier, she’s an “Army of One”
Another long day now it’s late in the night,
Double checking her gear, so she ready to fight.
As she laces her boots she’s reminded that she,
Is paying a price so that we can live free.
She’s an American Soldier, being all she can be
Fighting for freedom, for our liberty
She’s somebody’s daughter, maybe somebody’s mom
An American soldier, she’s an “Army of One”
On the alter of freedom, many lives have been laid,
She stops to remember the price that they’ve paid
While pausing to give them, respect they deserve
She stands and salutes the all the ones who still serve.
As American Soldiers, being all they can be
Fighting for freedom, for our liberty
They’re somebody’s daughter, They’re somebody’s son
They’re American soldiers, an “Army of One”
Now lets give her honor, and we’ll all sing along,
To an American Soldier coz she’s “ARMY STRONG”
She’s an American Soldier, being all she can be
Fighting for freedom, for our liberty
She’s somebody’s daughter, maybe somebody’s mom
An American soldier, she’s an “Army of One”
