Story behind the song
an 8 channel, interactive performance of this piece as well as a few others by 60hz, DJ Pallindrone, and a jazz-rock trio will happen this weekend at the '92 Theatre.
Lyrics
8 wavetables, each 256 (2^8) samples long, were generated in four distinct ways, two of each method: hand-drawn, spectrally generated, sampled, and synthesized (using phase modulation and subtractive filters). these 8 waveforms are present in all 8 channels of the piece, although they have been wildly transformed, largely by waveset decomposition, granulation, and convolution with trains of bandlimited impulses. the piece was commissioned for a multichannel concert in which 8 channels are panned among an 8 speaker array. the location of each of the 8 channels is controlled by the movements of the audience within the space. If all this 8 nonsense seems arbitrary to you, it is. 8 is just a number. In fact, the whole thing is pretty arbitrary. What is important is the texture of the sounds as they coallesce into a single sound mass, from which individual voices emerge and are lost again. I was playing with the idea of the drone, but largely kept from making it a drone piece because i wanted the drone to be resituated as something extra-harmonically related. there is much symmetry to be found in the piece, and hopefully it's ramifications into the rhythmic and harmonic arenas become apparent at certain points in the piece. it is intentionally dense and should be listened to at a moderately high volume.
