Story behind the song
This was the first song that Bill Bruton (bass) contributed to the Nightchild song list. We did a few more of his over the years, but I believe this is the only one that actually got recorded. Since then Bill has become quite a prolific writer of both songs and poetry. The words in this tune really say a lot about the man who wrote it, and the times we were living back then. A great f#*kin' tune!
Lyrics
Flirting with death is the only way to live A lethal dose of fun ain’t enough The more you take, the more you’ve got to give Living on the edge can get rough Lost in a bottle, hand on the throttle Tearing down the runway of life Take another drink, and you start to think Where the hells it all gonna end? Heads in a spin, tails in the wind Moving on from town to town Go to bed lost and you wake up found Never a chance to slow down Things come to focus, you start to lose touch People turn away when you speak Leave death and destruction in your path Be strong and never be weak Reality looks fine Through a bottle of gin Now you’re in the race But you’re never gonna win You should’ve seen it coming But you closed your eyes Now there’s no where to turn You slammed the wall Yeah, you’ve lost it all I guess we never learn Lost in a bottle, hand on the throttle Tearing down the runway of life Take another drink, and then you start to think Where the hells it all gonna end? Reality looks fine Through a bottle of gin Now you’re in the race But you’re never gonna win
