Walter Garland and Joe Alford were members of The Collin Raye Band for many years and began writing songs on the tour bus and in hotel rooms. Story behind the song
Larry Volz, Greg Hughes and I had written most of this in 1974. That band, Volz, broke up and I presented it to James Elder when we worked together in the band, Trikks, and he added a part to the song. This is an extremely bad "live" recording from a 1978 "boom box". I have cleaned it up the best that I could. I will add a lyric sheet later.
Lyrics
“County Line” Larry Volz Joe Alford Greg Hughes (1974) Verse 1 Pumpin’ that gas at sunrise Keepin’ cars movin’ under Texas skies See him there sittin’ by the side of the road When we passed him by, they made a new highway code Chorus 1 Keep, keep on rollin’ Friday night headin’ for that county line Watch out for your speed and Hardy Wayne Poland Spend the night in jail for drinkin’ whiskey and wine Verse 2 Movin’ down the highway, got the stuff in the truck Gotta find some women, ‘cause we just made a buck See him there sittin’ by the side of the road When we passed him by, they made a new highway code Chorus 2 Keep, keep on rollin’ Friday night headin’ for that county line Watch out for your speed and Hardy Wayne Poland Spend the night in jail for drinkin’ whiskey and wine Solo Chorus 3 Keep, keep on rollin’ Friday night headin’ for that county line Watch out for your speed and Hardy Wayne Poland Spend the night in jail for drinkin’ whiskey and wine Verse 3 Movin’ down the highway, got the stuff in the truck Gotta find some women, ‘cause we just made a buck See him there sittin’ by the side of the road When we passed him by, they made a new highway code Chorus 4 Keep, keep on rollin’ Friday night headin’ for that county line Watch out for your speed and Hardy Wayne Poland Spend the night in jail for drinkin’ whiskey and wine
