Story behind the song
When I wrote this song, I had recently read the story of David and Goliath. But in my minds eye, I saw David's elderly mother, miles away, down on her knees, praying for protection for her sons, and for deliverance from the invading army. Only God knows how many people are down on their knees praying this very moment, praying unselfish prayers for God's people, for the Lost, for the hurt and the dying, and those trapped in addictions. This society tends to tell the senior citizen that they are worthless. They are relegated to nursing homes and cast aside to wait to die. But GOD sees these people as people of infinite worth, worth DYING for, and figuratively on their knees, they are a powerful force in the church to guide the hand of God to help YOU in time of trouble. These 'Unsung Heroes' will one day be revealed, and what they have done to move the hand of God and further the Cause of Christ. And I believe that ALL of us will be lining up to thank them.
Lyrics
Verse 1: Far, far away from the sound of any battle An aging mother wept, with her face to the floor Before the throne of heaven She lifted up her voice To beseech the Lord of Glory To deliver once more. And the Lord of Heaven heard the cry His weeping daughter gave. And the tide of battle turned, and Israel was saved And the Philistines were vanquished on that day. Chorus: Unsung Heroes! Down on their knees. Praying for the heart of God to turn their way! And who knows How many Unsung Heroes Battle every day! Praying God will guide you And help you on your way. Verse 2: In a wheelchair In a nursing home in Memphis There sits an ancient lady forgotten by the world And her hands, they may be feeble But she folds them now to pray And the Lord of All Creation Sees ‘Daddy’s Little Girl!’ And that lady is our church’s greatest hero And only heaven knows the work She’s doing in His name! And there are thousands like her, Secret soldiers for the Lord Seeking neither fame nor reward. Chorus: (2 times)
