A West Virginia native, Greg Mason has been writing songs almost all of his life. "The first time I heard the Beatles at a very young age, I knew this was something I had to do. I would take the songs I heard on the radio and write new words to the melodies." In high school, Greg joined his first band and began writing melodies and songs of his own. "We were big into punk music at the time and I had almost no knowledge of music theory so it worked out well for us!" But, in 1987, a trip to the mall changed the way he approached his songwriting. "My Aunt and Uncle bought me my first Bob Dylan album and everything changed. It was like someone had turned on the light. I studied his timing and chord progressions and I learned to keep all the channels open and absorb everything around me. My songs are not only about what is going on inside of me, but what is going on with the people and events that surround me." As his songwriting progressed through the 1990's, Greg played in cover bands in the bars and spent late nights recording his songs on an old analog 4-track. In 2001, Greg teamed up with some old friends and recorded GYPSY DAVY'S first CD "Right On Time This Time". He then built a recording studio in his backyard and soon after GYPSY DAVY'S "Desparation Station" was recorded and released in 2004. Lyrics
CEDAR LAKE Written by Greg Mason April 12, 1994 Went down to cedar lake Birds are flying everywhere. And every sound that they make echoes softly through the air. So I stepped onto a stepping stone Thoughts of you won’t leave me alone anyway... Walked down through the park People passing everywhere. The sky grew cold and dark Reflecting on the water’s glare. So I climbed up to a mountain top To clear my head, collect my thoughts and pray. Watch the tears as they flow down my face Everyone has a price they have to pay And I know that everything must change Watch the tears as they flow down my face. Through sorrow and fears Yet I waste another day. Through heartache and tears This emptiness won’t go away. But, I find myself addicted to The loneliness that’s caused by you anyway. Watch the tears as they flow down my face Everyone has a price they have to pay And I know that everything must change Watch the tears as they flow down my face. If you go down to cedar lake You’ll see things much more clearly there. And every breath that you take Will seem a little lighter there. And step onto that stepping stone Harvest seeds that you have sown everyday.
