THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG GUARDIAN ANGEL By Fremont John Ashton Bad habits, self-destructive patterns or things we do in spite of our better judgment might all be blamed on the devil inside. To varying degrees, it’s in each and every one of us. Guardian Angel is about those aspects of myself that I would change if I could. I’ve lived a life that is to me very obviously protected by one or more guardian angels. Feeling particularly frustrated one morning with myself, I decided to call out with the song “Guardian Angel”. It’s a prayer, isn’t it. My first lyric draft of this song is dated Friday, August 22, 2003. The last draft (#15) is dated September 18, 2003 so, it took about a month to write this one. That’s not unusual for me. It started out with the phrase “Carry me” and that was initially the title until the song sufficiently developed into what it is. My songs have a way of not being about anything at the start but just sort of developing on their own. I often don’t know what I’m writing about at the outset. The songs come to me little by little until I can get the gist of them. Sometimes that takes an afternoon as in “One Love” and sometimes it takes years for a song to completely reveal itself to me as in “Tidal Wave”.
