Rap with a Jazz/Blues Feel
Canadian composer of original jazz fusion.
I studied classical composition at Carleton University. I then moved to Montreal to study jazz composition with Andrew Homzy and Joe Sullivan. I am currently studying counterpoint in the Baroque style. My plan is to meld classical with jazz harmonies scored for an electronic orchestra.
Story behind the song
I once saw Nick "Brownman" Ali perform and his percussionist did a rap piece. I liked the mixture of jazz and rap and decided to write my own version.
Lyrics
Let me tell you ‘bout something
It’s very powerful
Get it in you, you start to feel magical
Everyone will enjoy its splendour, don’t defend her, just surrender
‘Cause music brings us together (4X)
The story starts and I’m sitting at home
Chillin’ and relaxin’ all alone
I get a call from a buddy of mine
He says – It’s nighttime and I have to underline
Take the time, come over to my house and let’s have some partytime
Take a cab, and what do I see
My heart is lifted by what’s in front of me
A crowd of people groovin’ to tunes under the moon
Dancin’ and singin’ in the month of June
So I think to myself, well I have to concur
Try to avoid it but it always occurs
That music brings us together (4X)
Well I’m walking along on a sunny afternoon
After that party in the month of June
Well I have to stop, there’s a crowd in the street
A band is playin’ to a funky beat
Guitar, drums and a swingin’ bass
I like this place, it’s got a good headspace
Drop your briefcase, let the music take you someplace
Different than what you’re used to
Enjoying your life is not taboo, look around you
No-one’s under the weather, all-together, light as a feather
‘Cause music brings us together (4X)
Well cut to now and I’m playing for you
I hope you like it is what I do
I write some tunes and I play for a crowd, I feel proud
When I look around
The band up here is playing some sounds
For you, that is what we do
Thank you for coming to this rendez-vous
Some stuff you like, stuff you hate
However, there’s something I’d like to indicate
Look around and I will endeavour
To make my point now and forever
It’s plain to see, I hope you agree that
Music brings us together (4X)
