This song is a kind of cross between a soul and a latin number that emerged from some experiments in mixing rythms from my Band In a Box software in order to create more variety in the backing. The song itself is about the stages of any relationship
Light acoustic rock folk
I play guitar and sing against backings that I have created using various software tools. I am therefore a home recorder primarily concerned with minting decent recordings of my own songs rather than a performer.
Story behind the song
The lyrics of this song emerged first as a kind of poem and because of that it seemed too repetitive when put to song. This led me to introduce a bridge section and to try a change of rythm, from a kind of soulish backing to a latin style. The transitions were the thing that needed managing and playing in. I was quite lucky to discover during this process some brass backings from a couple of separate rythm styles that played well against each other, a sort of duelling brass effect. So I placed them in the mix playing from either side of centre and they provide plenty of oomph for the last verses.
Hope they aren't too overpowering and that someone out there enjoys the song and lyrics. I know my singing isn't great and one day I will invest in some voice tweaking tools, but for now this is the ugly truth.
Lyrics
You Gotta Place
If you should walk by on the street
And if our eyes should just happen to meet
Then baby please don’t be shy
You gotta’ place in my eye
If you should thrill me with that look
And smile at me when a liberty I took
Then there’s no need to be kind
You gotta’ place in my mind
You’re looking blindin’, and I’m findin’, you seem excitin’, I need remindin’
That baby we really only just met
And I oughta, not resort to, to try to sort you, I must exhort you
To go with every move we make
Instrumental
If we should find a pause to talk
And you amuse me as we walk
Then baby let me be clear
You gotta’ place in my ear
If we should happen to date for a while
And then my jokes still made you smile
You maybe working your charms
You gotta’ place in my arms
Well I’m reeling, from the feeling, you’re appealing and we’re sealing
Our love with every step we take
And I ought to, not resort to, try to sort you, must exhort you
To cherish every move we make
Instrumental
If we should find ourselves entwined
I make a move and you don’t mind
Then baby, don’t leave me for dead
You gotta’ place in my bed
If we should find our true romance
And we don’t want to leave it to chance
Then baby please don’t depart
You’ve gotta place in my heart
