Hi folks, This site acts as a personal archive of my work. So you'll find my best recordings here as well as some pretty crappy ones. The earliest recordings here were made on simple cassette decks, others were made on mobile phones, some are live recordings made at various gigs over the years, a handful were made in small recording studios, but most of the more recent ones were made at home on a Zoom portable studio, which itself is now rather ancient! Story behind the song
I wrote this song after a momentary and indescribable experience of self-realisation. This was a truly life-changing experience which has coloured my interpretation of all my life experiences ever since. I later found what seemed to me as good a description as could be of this experience in the Svetasvatara Upanishad. Here is a short extract from the translation by Swami Prabhavananda and Frederick Manchester: "Know God, and all fetters will be loosed. Ignorance will vanish. Birth, death and rebirth will be no more. Meditate upon him and transcend physical consiousness. Thus you will reach union with the lord of the universe. Thus you will become identified with him who is One without a second. In him all your desires will find fulfillment. The truth is that you are always united with the Lord. But you must KNOW this. Nothing further is there to know. Meditate and you will realize that mind, matter and Maya (the power which unites mind and matter) are but three aspects of Brahman, the one reality. Forgetting his oneness with thee, bewildered by his weakness, full of sorrow is man; but let him look close on thee, know thee as himself, O Lord, most worshipful, and behold thy glory - Lo, all his heavy sorrow is turned to joy." If that's a bit too rich then perhaps try Alan Watts, who gave the whole game away with his brilliant little book - "The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are". This recording was made in London in 1975 with my friends Max Born and Mark Nicholas.
