The Greatest Joy I've Ever Known
Nothing compares to the everlasting joy that knowing Jesus brings.
. receive all glory, honor, and praise!
Story behind the song
The lyric implies that I've tried drugs, using words like "trip" and "high" but I never have. That's not to say I haven't had my own vices. I was merely using that experience to compare with the unspeakable joy of Christ.
Lyrics
"THE GREATEST JOY I'VE EVER KNOWN" by Jeff Leslie ca. 1978
I tried to fill my cup with the pleasures of this world
But I seemed to keep running dry
I did lots of things but could never fill it up
No matter how hard I'd try
To fill it to the top would have been ecstacy
But I could not seem to do it on my own
I soon began to think that it could not be done
What I would have paid to have known
So I began to ask around and I'd say
"Hey you, what is that makes you smile?"
But everything I heard just was not new to me
There was nothing I had not tried
Well, I almost gave up, then I asked one more smile
"Say, what are you so happy about?"
It almost seemed like he was more anxious to tell me
Than I was anxious to find out
'Cause he said:
"He fills my cup till it overflows
He never ever lets it run dry
He satisfies the best of everything I know
It's no kind of trip. It's more than a high
'Cause it never stops
As long as I believe that He's there
He won't leave me alone
Through thick and thin then back again
It's the greatest joy I've ever known."
Well, this guy was speakin' my language
He seemed to have tried a lot of different things, too.
So I said, "Can you promise me He'll do the same
For me as He does for you?"
He said, "No, no, no, no, no. I can't but He can
And rest assured, His promise is as true as life."
Sure enough it is 'cause now I'm living proof
Just look and see who's wearin' that smile.
He fills my cup till it overflows
He never ever lets it run dry
He satisfies the best of everything I know
It's no kind of trip. It's more than a high
'Cause it never stops
As long as I believe that He's there
He won't leave me alone
Through thick and thin then back again
It's the greatest joy I've ever known
He's the most wonderful, marvelous
Stupendous, superior
He does a lot to brighten my facial exterior
Fantastically beautiful, "neat" life He's shown
It's the greatest joy I've ever known
That's right, it's the greatest joy I've ever known
