Lyrics
Drowning, recollected – part for live reciter
[A version of the poem to be recited live with prerecorded music is provided below, though in each performance words can be improvised or changed, or switched among the different sections of the piece. This version corresponds to the recording provided in the package, but may not correspond exactly to the proposed performance.]
1.Introduction – Theme A [0:00 to 0:25]
Still, green, almost beautiful
Till it grows and grows
2. Interruption 1 [0:26 to 0:37]
Over, ahead
They race, tumble and flee
Like bees, like dust
(It looks pretty)
3. Theme B [0:38 to 1:05]
And the quietened villages, from afar
Echo the hollow roar
Echo the hollow roar…
And then silent
Lies the water.
It pauses…
3. Watershed 1 [1:06 to 1:41]
In one flanging wave,/
It is upon me, /
The painter in words and chords/
Of this scene./
It changes its hues/
Harsher than I can record and
There is / no time anyways as
My lungs get / filled up, I can’t sing
But only / splutter and then
Rise up in a / cascade of
Little droplets and salt, /and rise again
In another,
A / cascade of twigs and sunlight and hope.
And then / all is quiet, only
Gently swinging.
4. Return & development of theme A [1:42 to 2:01]
And such violence could spawn this quietness?
5. Reflection upon theme B [2:02 to 2:37]
It doesn’t seem that way.
It is a still life
With me floating under a melancholy sky
Of hues in subtle blues and greens…
Not even the roar of thousands fleeing
Produced this song,
Nor these screams of hundreds drowned
Could find its way into
Any sincerity of lament,
Nor the tears of the dispossessed…
In this protected mind-world,
I float.
6. Watershed 2 [2:38 to 3:24]
Not the roar of thousands? Amidst the shrieking winds of
Storms they appear only as punctuation to my
Beautiful cascades and my pretty leaps:
Except if you listen really close
And discern how their streaming movements
Make a poem more beautiful than this, a song
More sincere and tender, as they
Have to do with life.
Not like this guilty frozen art, set up
High for winds to hack at.
7. Interruption 2 [3:25 to 3:38]
Where at... Is it coming? The water?
8. Return & development of Theme A [3:39 to 3:48]
It will have the last say…
9. Coda [3:49 to 4:24]
It will fade away
Beyond songs and lives.
Beyond these musings that recollection
Has made pretty.
Fade. Away.
