Story behind the song
Two inspirations for this song: my mom always said that you could tell a person's heart and soul by looking into his/her eyes; and a priest was giving a homily one time and asked the question, "If someone looked into your eyes, would he/she see at least a few traces of Jesus?" When I heard him say those words, I immediately began writing the song (in my head until I got hold of paper and pen!) and the song came together rather quickly.
Lyrics
TRACES of JESUS, by Dan Dúet Street corner preacher, a lonely old man Looking at everyone, just as close as he can Some say he's a prophet, or a little insane I got close enough that I could hear him say: CHORUS: Let me look into your eyes So I can see down into your soul I could tell you everything about your life But what I'm really looking for, are traces of Jesus I try to get past him in the midst of the crowd But I hear him call me, like no one's around A little ashamed, though I pray every night Still not quite sure, of just what he might find CHORUS So many questions, so little time Just trying to do the best I can I know there'll come a time, come a day When the Angel of the Lord says to me: Let me look into your eyes So I can see down into your soul I could tell you everything about your life But what I'm really looking for, all I'm really looking for, Are traces of Jesus
