Story behind the song
When this piece was first conceived, I was sitting on a balcony overlooking the beach at a condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama playing Hank Becker’s mighty fine Guild guitar. There was a couple holding hands on the beach, romantically looking at the sunset. Somehow my perspective transformed into a vision of an early New England woman bidding her mariner spouse goodbye for what she intuitively knew was the last time. In her mind, however, the melancholy and inevitability of the situation is offset by the knowledge that somewhere, sometime their paths would again cross.
Lyrics
I’ll stand by your side in the morning Together we’ll greet the new day When the moon in your eyes keeps me wanting, sail away I may cry in your footprints as you’re leaving But this is not the first time I’ve seen you go Tell me goodbye without speaking, sail away Wading through the waters awaiting your return Sometimes it’s hard to leave those bridges as they burn Soon you will be by my side again, your golden hair Reprieve from my despair, the pure love-scented air will set me free I’ll see you again in a distant land Touch your face with a different hand Caress your eyes with mine Oh we will share the wine of the new day
