Story behind the song
I wrote this song in 1999 for the St. Matthias Episcopal Church (East Aurora, NY) Sunday School program to support the Gospel reading for the 2nd Sunday in Advent.
Lyrics
Refrain “Prepare the way of the Lord,” Was John the Baptist’s Cry From the Bank of the Jordon River To all he did baptize. The prophet, Isaiah, Foretold the messenger Who would shout out from the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” John told the Judeans and the people of Jerusalem “I will baptize you with water. He will baptize with the Holy Spirit. And He who will come after me is so much greater than I am, That to untie his sandals, I am unworthy and unfit.” Refrain The wild man of the Jordan, clothed in camel’s hair, Would ask of those who came to him, “Repent of all your sins.” To prepare the way for Jesus, to make a pathway straight for Him, John called them to the river, and then he led them in.
