Story behind the song
I spent a lot of time in the woods- just sitting and watching. I saw a lot of things that I have since been unable to share. When I returned to the city, I also saw a lot of things there that I was unable to share clearly.
I wrote this song in an attempt to articulate what I was feeling when I noticed how far out of sync the people of my culture are compared to everything else in the natural world. It was shocking, sad, funny, hopeful, and beautiful all at once.
Lyrics
Feeling down
Guess I didn’t make the grade
And those who hurry on
Have left me all alone
Slowing Down
Its not bad where I am
I’ll just be lost for now
If I’m not worried how
To make it home
Standing like a tree by the roadside
I see so many people hurry by
I show them things but no one seems to realize
That all they need is right before their eyes
So I sit here alone
Feeling Down
All around
I hear those gentle voices
Saying things I’ve heard before
And they tell me more
Every time
Every time I turn around
There’s something new in store
That I’ve seen before
Many times
Watching like the Owl in the moon light
I see my people tremble through the night
I show them things but no one seems to realize
That all they fear is right between their eyes
So I sit here alone
Feeling Down.
Something strange.
A sound like rain drops falling
But the sun is shining bright
There’s not a cloud in sight
Something strange.
I hear my people crying
And it makes me feel bad
To see my people sad
All around me,
Flowing like a river through the country side
I’ll gather all the tears my people cry
And take them to the ocean where they’re purified
And maybe then my people they will smile
And I’ll sit here unknown
All the while.
