Story behind the song
Originally, the idea began in 1985 while working on some beats. I had forgotten about the track for a while. Three years later, on a Friday while working at Atlantic Records in New York, I went to a vacant part of the building next door (where the label now resides) to take a break. While lying in the darkness, the end hook came to mind, "spend all my time..." That weekend, I locked myself in my home studio and did not come out until it was finished. After playing the track for some friends in the business, they all told me to get it out there and get a deal. I took it to a friend of mine named Anthony at Vendetta Records, who said it was great but to clean up some edits. The result was well received. A few weeks later, Paradise Roman of Big Beat Records called me to tell me he loved the track and wanted to offer me a deal. Label boss Craig Kallman called it "genius" and Ken Kommisar at Atlantic told me he wanted to sign me. I decided to go with Big Beat where the project was eventually dropped. A boutique label called HuGE Records picked it up a few years later and it was released as a 12". By that time, the song was re-recorded in bigger rooms (Unique, Calliope, INS) but the vibe wasn't the same. The single still shows up on EBay from time to time. For all of you gearslutophiles, here was how it was originally done: Recorded on a Tascam Portastudio 2, using FSK to sync the audio to an Atari 130XE computer, running software called MIDITrack II. The Drums were a TR-808, the bass was a Yamaha FB01 and the rest of the synths were a Korg Poly 800. The open hi-hat was a Siel MDP40. The mic was an ElectroVoice ND457 and the effects unit was a MIDIVerb II. Everything was mixed down to a JVC Cassette Deck using Dolby C (DAT wasn't available in the States at that time).
Lyrics
So long, so wrong The part of me that knew you best is oh so gone I always hoped that we would be together You just robbed me of your love I never dreamed You'd take away My heart and runaway And tell me to Accept The time has come Accept It's all been said and done The sooner you realize what I see in your eyes It's time for you For you to move on So hard to face Nobody in this world will ever take her place All my friends say that I must forget her I only wish is she'd come back forever Why was she so cruel? Everybody tells me That it's my turn to Accept It's over and done Accept When the truth don't turn you on Release your emotion give up the devotion Accept the fact The fact that she is gone Spend all my time Trying just a little bit of this And a little bit of that And a little bit of this And a little bit of that I ain't got nothin' left for you girl I ain't got nothin' left for you baby I just gotta go gotta go gotta go gotta go Gotta go gotta go gotta go gotta go Maybe some other lifetime... ©1988 Eneonycity all rights reserved
