Fly Away, Fly (original version)
A song about 'letting go' when a loved one dies.
Primarily contemporary Christian, based in the Roman Catholic Church.
Hi. My name is Dan Dúet (real last name... no "duet" pun... I'm just a proud Cajun)
I started playing guitar in college (at LSU), began writing songs for retreats... and the rest just kind of snowballed from there.
My website is: www.danduet.com and I have a MySpace at: www.myspace.com/danduet
Feel free to visit there as well!
Story behind the song
What a strange feeling. My very first-ever, childhood "best friend" died. So much for the memories of innocence.
His entire life he battled illness and a variety of setbacks, yet he always planned for the future, always had a goal set before him. He wasn't quite 40 years old when complications from a kidney transplant took his life.
I was flying back to San Antonio after his funeral Mass in New Orleans. Somewhere over the skies of Houston, as I looked out the window of the plane into the night sky, I wondered what I would tell him if God gave me one last chance to speak to him.
After thinking about it for a minute or two, I thought that I'd probably tell him to "Fly away with the angels... go back to Heaven... that's where you belong... in Heaven with Jesus. Don't look back, just let the angels lead you."
By the time the plane landed I had written the song. As soon as I got home from the airport, I picked up my guitar and the song was there.
This song is in memory of John Paul Cantrell.
Lyrics
Fly Away, Fly
words and music by Dan Dúet
Seems like yesterday I saw you
Chasing dreams for a better day
But sometimes dreams they slip away
Sometimes taken, sometimes taken away
Still you laughed and still you smiled
Though the road you walked how it seemed it would never end
Streets of gold you wander now, found your freedom as a song in the wind... I heard you singing,
Fly away to the heavens. Fly away back home.
Fly away with the angels. Fly away, fly.
A'int it funny how fast the years they go by
But we never, never notice, we never take the time
So we wonder now and we question, "Why?"
Like the shadows that dance in the night, I heard them singing,
Fly away to the heavens. Fly away back Home.
Fly away with the angels. Fly away, fly.
Seems like yesterday I saw you there
I just turned around, just for one moment
And you were gone.
Now it's hard for me to let go,
To say "goodbye", when you're already gone, so I'm singing,
Fly away to the heavens. Fly away back Home.
Fly away with the angels. Fly away, fly.
