Grasshoppers
Spent years cultivatin’ my crops
My daddy did too and ma poppy’s poppa’s pop
Ev’ry ear of sweet corn and plump barley husk
We’ve won from this here earth workin’ hard from dawn ‘til dusk
But now there’s a big black cloud in the sky
Looks like it’s headin’ this way
There’s a weird kinda buzzin’ in the air
And what it is I don’t wanna have to say
Grasshoppers – non-payin’ shoppers - ome to clean out ma little farm
Grasshoppers – stalk-choppers - come down here to do me some harm
Wish that Jiminy Cricket’d go find another wicket
Cause he’s got such a wicked appetite
Sure hope that lunchy locust can stay unfocussed
And go get lost on some other poor cracker’s site
Grasshoppers – grain-stoppers - munchin’ their way through ev’rythin’ I got
Grasshoppers – leaf-loppers - turnin’ my happy fields into a place of rot
I’d put up nets if I thought it’d be any use
I’d plant sticks of dynamite and go light the fuse
I’d spray evil poison to get ev’rythin’ right
I’d send in the ant-bombers and give ‘em a real fright
So I guess I’ll just sit out here on the porch
Rockin’ idly in the beat-up old rockin’ chair
Watch as those grungy hungry insects steadily do me in
Maybe wonder ‘bout what kind of sin I been inheritin’
