Lyrics
Intro: It started in the beginning, long ago, in the beforetime
Before the rule of law covered this land
Before the social conventions that govern us came to be.
When there was only despair, fear, anger
I set upon the world on the path that you blazed me
I set upon the world in the way that you made me
I tried to live my life with your weight on my shoulders
I tried to find a cure before I got older
You are my mother, you gave me life
And your footprint is on my brow
You are my mother, you gave me life
And your bullet is in my soul
I’m here, despite all the feelings of insecurity
I am here, although you betrayed me and led me astray
I am here, although you just sat there and left me for dead
I am here despite all the promises that went unfulfilled
chorus:
So I’ve come to you asking for an explanation
So I’ve come to you seeking reconciliation
So I’ve come to you set aside my indignation
So I’ve come to you wondering what the went on
Keep sinking, go down with my ship
Keep screaming, I’ll just bite my lip
Keep singing, though the words are wrong
Keep lying to myself that it’s gone
Keep driving, though the road is long
Keep swerving, though the beer is gone
Keep grinding when the will is strong
Keep driving, though the road is wrong
Tonight this life is killing me
But if I wait until morning, I’ll be alright
Head on the pillow, I’ll be alright
With the southern rain, drift off to sleep
Oooh, I know
I’ll dream about what might have been
The crowd was cheering like my guitar was an angel
(And) like I was a god when I played
