This is about wanting something but being afraid to admit how important it is.
No band, just me and I'm no performer
Story behind the song
I was looking out on the Gulf of Mexico, scanning the horizon for ships and the line, "waiting for my ship to come in" kept intruding. The first first two verses wrote themselves.

ARE YOU SURE
© Ricki E. Bellos
I watch for my ship on a horizon that’s empty
Out of the corner of my eye
No sense in looking for something that’s already passed me by
If I was waiting for someone to save me
I’d wait a long, long time
There’s no saving someone who refuses to hold on to a life line
So are you sure it’s me
My heart you want to know
I have all this baggage
I’ll need help to let go
Are you sure it’s me
Everyone’s broken one way or another
It’s all a matter of degree
I can tell by your eyes you’ve left behind your share of dreams
An easy way out that’ll save you some trouble
Stay a while with me
When I’m not looking just walk away, it’s easy to leave
Now are you sure it’s you
There’s something you ought to know
I’ve heard about your past
You’ve been here before
Are you sure it’s you
I can’t believe you’re still here
I’m willing if you dare
Don’t know why you choose to stay
I’ll believe whatever you say
But are you sure we’re the ones
Of all the friends we know
To have this chance at love
We’ve been afraid to let show
Are you sure we’re the ones
