Story behind the song
I had a spare riff left over from an old song and I thought it was too good to waste and so it became the verse part here.
The rhythm throughout is not so much about keeping time as representing the wheels of industry.
The instrumental section at the end is meant to represent the Earth dying in agony to the accompaniment of the relentless rhythm of industry which is killing it. The synth solo is off the cuff and unedited and I was really giving it welly.
Lyrics
Spent my time looking after number one
Didn’t spare a thought for consequence
Had to have everything and have it now
Nothing but the best, hang the expense
Time was – the ocean clean
Time was – the desert green
Time was – that night was night
Time was – the stars were bright
Time was – the air was pure
Time was – the sky azure
Trampled my environment underfoot
Wasn’t the big issue way back then
Had my fill helping the economy
Ever since I can remember when
Time was – the ocean clean
Time was – the desert green
Time was – that night was night
Time was – the stars were bright
Time was – the air was pure
Time was – the sky azure
It took a long time, took a long time, took a long time to know.
It took a long time, took a long time, took a long time to show.
The evidence is clear for all to see
The damage done is hard to overstate
The clock is ticking, time is running out
Are we doing enough, is it too late?
Time was – the ocean clean
Time was – the desert green
Time was – that night was night
Time was – the stars were bright
Time was – the air was pure
Time was – the sky azure
It took a long time, took a long time, took a long time to know.
It took a long time, took a long time, took a long time to show.
Got to keep the land for dumping
Got to keep the oil well pumping
Got to keep the home fires burning
Got to keep the wheels a turning
Got to keep on dumping
Got to keep on pumping
Got to keep on burning
Got to keep on turning
NIce song!
