Story behind the song
In June of 2008 my wife and I performed some of our music at Club Cafe here in Pittsburgh for the first time. We loved the music from everyone that played. The next morning I woke up from a song in my dream. All I could remember was a descending line on the guitar and the phrase/melody of "Don't drown me out." I put it down on paper and worked with it, growing it into "Not Me At All."
I see it as a song about someone who is deciding to start living life without worrying about what others thing they should do or be. Sometimes it is hard to break our patterns of behavior, and this song is about doing just that - starting anew despite what anyone says.
In this recording you hear:
Vocals/Guitars/lap desk (snare sound)/computer desk (bass sound): Robert Miller
Flute: Stephanie Miller
I do have real percussion instruments, but the beads in the lap desk were the perfect sound, and the computer desk for the bass was discovered by accident while I was in the process of recording...I was tapping on the desk and the mic picked it up...and I went with it.
Lyrics
Don’t be late, things are getting underway
Making time taking steps to better days
Overdue, but I finally gave up waiting for the skies to change
Spoken words on the script before my eyes
Paging back, diving in between the lines
Wond’ring how I had squeezed into those lies I know so well
But I’m tossing out, I’m laying down
All the tattered clothes that I’ve been sportin’ around
Hoped they’d spruce me up, look cool against the wall
But that’s not me at all
In my hands, all the things I longed to see
A perfect fit, forming who I’m naturally
My surprise, they’ve been waiting there for me while I’ve been running back and forth
Through the trees, in the dark to find the sun
Finally saw, it’s been there since I’d begun
Now I’m back, to a place where all is
One, again, I’m skipping to the end so I can
Start, again, it’s time to live my life so if we
Meet, again, I might be with you
And not lost at all
Steppin’ out, see the person that you knew
Hit the road, ‘cause I’m finally coming through
Listen now for the new things that I’m saying to you
Don’t drown me out, don’t knock me down
Don’t kick up dirt just ‘cause I’m coming around
You can keep those doubts, old pictures on the wall
And don’t drown me out, don’t knock me down
Don’t kick up dirt just ‘cause I’m coming around
You can keep those doubts, old pictures on the wall
That’s not me at all
That’s not me at all
That’s not me at all
