Lyrics
Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov The Mermaid 1 The mermaid swam the blue river, Lit by the full moon; Trying to swim up to the moon On the silvery wave of foam. 2 Rustling and turning The reflection of the clouds in the river ; The mermaid sang, and her words Flew up the steep coast. 3 Sang the mermaid: " At the bottom, where I live, Plays glimmering day; There herds of small golden fishes flock; The cities are crystal there; 4 And there on a pillow of bright sand Under a shadow of dense reeds A hero, prey of a jealous wave, sleeps, The hero of a foreign land... 5 We love to comb the rings of silk curls In the dark of the night, The brow and lips of this handsome man In the hour of midday We have kissed several times; 6 But to passionate embraces, I do not know why, He remains cold, He sleeps, - and leaning on my breast, Does not breathe, does not whisper in dreams ". 7 So sang the mermaid above the blue river Not fully understanding her sadness, Or the noisy spinning fluctuations Of the clouds reflected in the river. 1831 (Translation by the composer)
